Giving Time - Teaching Skills for Life

Easy knitting!

by Melissa
(Massachusetts)

One of the things that many adults cherish from childhood is the adult craft that they began to learn as a child. Ask any adult knitter where they learned, and they’ll usually answer that their grandmother or mother taught them when they were very young, and that they picked up the needles again later in life.
This craft is ideal for older kids. It takes some hand dexterity and patience, and can be frustrating for those just starting out. To start, you need an adult who knows how to knit. If you don’t know, and don’t have time to learn, then a grandparent may be able to show them. If you’re lacking in crafty grandparents, then you could call and see if you could visit a nursing home. Many women in the older generations knew how to knit, and would love a visit from you and your child.
For this craft, you need a set of large knitting needles and yarn. A simple scarf is a good first project, but it might also help to have a simple pattern. Make sure you show the child the basics: they need to know how to cast on, knit, purl, and cast off.

Kids Crafts

by Sue

A great craft for kids that can turn into a wonderful piece of art for years to come.
What you need. Crayola finger Paints 11x18 sheets of paper Snap shots of your children Paper Plates
My kids loved doing this family project. We started off by going to the park, while the kids played I took pictures of them. Nothing posed just natural pictures.
When we returned home we got out the paints and I placed a different color on each paper plate.
I then let the kids go wild with two different pieces of 11x18 sheets of paper. Just let them do what ever they felt like, Hand prints, to drawings etc.
Once the sheets of paper dried and the pictures were developed I then had them help me place the pictures on top of the painting and attach them with picture tape. After which I framed the pictures and they are now wonderful pieces of art in our play room.

Coffee Can Piggy Bank

by Ashleigh Powell
(Pennsylvania)

My Daughter and I had so much fun with this activity.
To make a Piggy Bank, the possibilities are endless. Take an old coffee can or any other can with a plastic lid. First, cut a slot in the lid large enough for money to fit through. Next, cover the can with paper, wrapping paper, or fabric. With fabric, a parent must use a hot glue gun to attach it, as well as adding any decorations. Have the child use stickers, crayons, markers, anything they want to decorate their bank.
This is a perfect activity for children ages 4 and up. Not only will they be excited about making their own personalized piggy bank, but the excitement in their eyes as the bank gets heavier. Another positive aspect of this activity is to help your child count, learn about and identify money, and learn about saving. My 6 year old loved this activity and even made one for her 6 month old sister.

by Faith
(Stanaford,WV)

I'm a single Mom of 4, and a crafter as well. So gifts in my house are done from the heart and on a budget.
A few years ago we decided to do homeade gifts for family.
We collected information, such as their favorite color. We then bought fabric and fabric paint and pillow stuffing.
My children painted the pillows, doing handprints, flowers, and abstract art. Then on the back, using the fabric paint, they left personal messages.I did the sewing, they did the stuffing.
What a hit!
These pillows can be done for any occasion.

This is a very easy craft for kids, It is best suited for children over 5, it is a lot of fun and you can help kids learn.

materials:

glass jar
flower seeds
paint, paintbrush
soil

let kids use their creativity while teaching them important things like recycling, planting, and responsibility.

Use a recycled glass food jar, such as a spaghetti sauce jar, remove label and wash.
Have your kids paint a design on the outside of the jar.
Afterward, add a little bit of soil to the jar, and put flower seeds inside.
Cover the seeds with more dirt, put it at the window to get plenty of sunlight, and dont forget to water regularly.
kids will love watching their new plants grow.

This craft can be done in any season, not just the warm months, just make sure the plant gets plenty of light from the sun.
