Giving Time - Teaching Skills for Life

I am a home schooling dad,can you suggest how I make sure I teach my son at the right level of education. Is there a good way to work the type maths he needs to learn for instance. I don't want to overload him or to leave him bored because its too easy.
Also I am a bit worried that I may not be good enough in certain areas of home education, is there anywhere I can check up what I need to know? Any help would be appreciated.
