The Gamewright Hisss Card Game

The Gamewright Hisss Card Game

This is a great game for younger kids ages 3 and up. Actually older kids love this as well but it is ideal for the younger crowd. It is a card game for 2 to 5 players. The cards are made of a similar material to puzzle pieces. The object of the game is to tip the cards into a pile on the floor. each player takes a card from the pile and either adds it to a matching snake or start another snake. Each snake must have a head, tail and one or more body pieces. The winner of the snake is the person who completes it. It is a great color and pattern matching game that requires no reading. ThinkFun Zingo.

ThinkFun Zingo

The zingo cards are 3 by 3 grids with pictures and words. The yellow side of the zingo card is for the younger kids and the red for the older kids. Each player must try to fill up their card first. The winner shouts "zingo". You can purchase this game and read reviews here.

Trouble Board Game

Trouble Board Game

All of our kids have loved this game. It is so easy to get out and set up to play. The object of the game is to get your four game pieces around the board and home first. The dice are rolled in the center pop-o-matic. The dice are secured within this plastic dome so cannot get lost. It is a very simple race around the board game that is easy to learn. Even a 3 year old can play this. Due to the size of the game pieces though you would need to supervise very young children with this to prevent swallowing of the pieces. You can purchase this game and read reviews here.

Hi Ho Cherry-O

Hi Ho Cherry-O

This is a great game that could cause some frustration with younger players who may not have refined fine motor skills. Actually even our 9 year old gets frustrated as the cherries can quite easily get knocked over if the board is knocked at all. The game has small pieces so be careful if you have children who put things into their mouths. This is a great quick game that consists of removing cherries from the tree to fill up the baskets. The game has a twist in that a dog, bird or spilled bucket space on the gameboard will mean your cherries have to go back on the tree. You can purchase this game and read reviews here.

Games for 5 years and up

Most children of 5 years and up are able to grasp the concepts of playing kids board games. The games below are what we would recommend for children of 5 and above.

Blokus Classics Game

Blokus This fun board game is for ages five and upwards. 4 players are needed to make this really fun. A game of strategy the goal is to get rid of all of your pieces. This is done by each player placing pieces on the board from their corner in turn. You have to make sure that each piece you lay down touches at least one other piece of the same color. Only the corners can touch. Blokus helps kids to develop spatial awareness. This game has won several well deserved awards. You can purchase this game and check out the many reviews here.

Cranium Hullabaloo

Cranium Hullabaloo board game

This is not a board game and needs floor space but a great enough game to add to this page

The manufacturers recommended age for this is 10. However we have found this game to be much more suited to children of 4 and upwards. This game is great to play as a family game or your kids and their friends. in fact we have used this with our childrens church as well and they thoroughly enjoyed it. The only issue we have found is that the console is not quite loud enough when the kids get excited and loud. The kids need to listen and follow instructions. They get to do a funky dance, and spin to the trumpet, hop to the red square etc. Kids will need to know shapes and colors to play this game. This is a great party game and can easily be packed to take away on holidays. You can purchase this game and check out the many reviews here.

Qwirkle Board Game

Qwirkle Board Game

This game consists of wooden blocks. Each player lays down blocks to create columns and rows of matching colors or shapes or both. Strategically place your tile to touch multiple pieces that match in color and shape to win big points. The more this is played the more you come up with strategics ideas for blocking other players moves. Your kids will quickly learn how to spot the best place to add a block to gain the most points. This game grows with your kids. You can purchase this game and check out the reviews here.

MindWare Qwirkle Cubes are another qwirkle game that is worth looking at as well.

STARE! JUNIOR Game - 2nd Edition

STARE kids board game

This game is great for helping with developing concentration spans and memory skills. Includes 160 fun image cards with 960 questions, game board, sand timer, playing pieces, and a dice. It is a very simple game. Simply stare at your card for 30 seconds and then answer questions about what you have seen. We sometimes play without the board which speeds the game up and you can use it while travelling. You can purchase this game and check out the reviews here.

Color Sudoku Puzzle

Colored wooden marbles make this game unsuitable for children who still put objects into their mouths. This game is great to give kids confidence to do sudoku as they do not have to use numbers. The game cards included range form very easy to difficult. This allows for the whole family to be able to play. You can purchase this game and check out the reviews here
